Not long after his and fern delaney's meeting with Necrozma, Zev made his way to Lesser Megalopolis once more. The landscape of oppressive darkness had become familiar to him; he could easily navigate his way to the central tower from the rift between worlds. Neither were its inhabitants anything more than a nuisance to him, as long as he avoided the Ultra Beasts. [break][break]

The light at the tower's zenith flashed, a seductive beacon for the city's damned. In the far distance, crazed screams filled the air. [break][break]

"If this is your first time here, watch your step. Much of the city is rubble," Zev said, turning to two of his companions: the Ultra Space researchers he and Fern had selected for their expedition. [break][break]

ameena abadi and Neffatari Nzingha. [break][break]

"And stay close to Admin Delaney and me. We'll cut down any Megalopolans who attack us on the way to the tower's roof, but we can't help you if you wander off." [break][break]

Zev spared his wife a fleeting glance before starting down the street toward their destination. His Illumina Chandelure lit the way ahead, pushing back the gloom with an eerie, violet glow.

Nenet steps lightly after Zev, her eyes darting this way and that as she picks her way through the rubble of Lesser Megalopolis, Memories of a ruined spaceship and endless toil cloud her mind while the flavour of cloying peach is just on the tip of her tongue at a sight so similar to the Megalopolis they crashed upon.

Bile rises in the back of her throat.

Shaking her head, she catches Zev's gaze when he glances towards her; only he could catch the faint tension in her jaw, the only betrayal of her discomfort, should he look close enough.

They press forwards.
[break][break]
"I haven't any desire to wander off," Nenet assures her husband.

In an attempt to distract herself, she instead looks over their other companions, Admin Delaney and Ameena Abadi, lit beneath the eerie light of Zev's Chandelure. Admin Delaney remains a mystery while Ameena she recognises from the nightmare of the Prismatic Penitentiary - one who tried to take a Megalopolan child.

No good. Bile rises once more.

"Have either of you been here before," she asks, the question hanging openly for anyone to answer. She's already well aware of Zev's foray into Lesser Megalopolis.

The pressure is on. She feels a heavier weight from her company than from the task at hand, concerned about the consequences to disappointing an Admin, a Beast, and one of the greatest minds Rocket has to offer. She's grateful to demonstrate her scientific skillset, as her combat experience has been poorly suited for the nature of battle in Hoenn - though she's spent countless hours lately to rectify it. [break][break]

She recognizes the path they're taking to the tower. She's been several times with the ever-competent Gwendolyn Conway , but she isn't sure it's wise to name the Ranger. She doesn't want Gwen to face any scrutiny when Ameena has not yet groomed her into becoming a research partner and fellow Rocket; admittedly, she wants no scrutiny on herself if the League interaction seems suspicious. [break][break]

"I have been before." Her gaze falls to a defunct z-crystal on the ground. "The Guzzlord were unexpected." She hadn't cared for the lack of clarity she'd gotten on Megalopolan technology. If only she'd held onto Novina back in the Penitentiary. [break][break]

It was no secret that Fern had been champing at the bit to return to the city once he and Zev Harcourt left. He would have been content to turn right back around the next day. But planning was, unfortunately, a necessity.[break][break]
They were a bit uncharacteristically quiet, defaulting to allow Zev to do the directing. Normally, they might have had little qualm in announcing themself or where they were going–and in all actuality they would more than likely revert to this the further into the decrepit city the group descended. It was the buzz that hummed under their skin that wouldn’t let them be. A persistent anticipation for what they were approaching.[break][break]
This was the precipice to something more. Greater insight as to what had drawn their patron out, away from the city it was meant to be guarding. A chance to see how the others might engage it if they were able to uncover their hiding places.[break][break]
Fern could tell that it affected Tapu Koko as well. The guardian had drifted higher up. Following them from above as electricity occasionally licked off its narrow body in bright bursts. It was more like an overgrown glowbug than the consistent, soft light of the Beast’s chandelure.[break][break]
They knew little of Neffatari Nzingha or ameena abadi, but they were curious about each of their expertises in this realm. Their head canted to the side, easily answering the question raised– “Multiple times,” they said, twisting their tone into something cavalier and breezy despite the incessant impatient eagerness that continued to crawl under their skin.[break][break]
A sharper smile tugged across their mouth, “Though I think the blacephalon were much more of a treat.”

Zev remained silent while the other three conversed. His senses were on high alert, keen eyes sliding from shadow to shadow to watch for dangers. Though he normally took the most direct route to the tower, Ameena's and Nenet's lack of powers meant the safe route was better, even if it was longer. [break][break]

Eventually, they reached the base of the structure. A few corpses stretched out on the stairs leading up to the doors: Megalopolans completely covered in black crystal, as if consumed by a parasite. Zev stepped over them without a second thought. [break][break]

"We're going straight up to the top," he explained for the scientists' benefit. "There, I'll summon Necrozma so it can transport us to the rocky world we saw through the rifts. We think that's where we'll find the shiny Tapu Lele." [break][break]

Miraculously, the elevator was working that day. Zev pressed the button for the roof, and the carriage lurched upward.

The bright side was Nenet was with three people who had experience in this pocket rift. The not so bright side was everything reminded her of pain and suffering.

Pushing her thoughts to the side, Nenet gives Zev a sharp nod as to their impending itinerary. She almost pauses to examine the crystal-covered Megalopolans they happen up as they climb the stairs - a form that tickles half-remembered dreams of black crystals and jackal-wide smiles.

"Do we think the Tapu will be aggressive?" she asks as she skips up a missing step in the stairway. In the distance she hears the sound of crumbling concrete amidst an otherwise eerie silence. With a look towards Fern's Tapu Koko's flitting form, its body occasionally sparking with light as if in barely contained anticipation.

Her hand then going into the pack she halfway pulls off her shoulders, Nenet pulls out a pokeball and release Clefable. The little pink Pokemon shakes himself exuberantly as he looks around; flashing Fern and Ameena wide smiles, the Clefable's expression sours instantly as he catches sight of Zev.

Beginning to stop, the light touch of Nenet's hand at the back of Clefable's head sends the Pokemon continuing up the stairs begrudgingly.

"Don't remind me of the Blacephalon," she grumbled after Fern's commentary. The damn things had done their best to blow up her, Gwendolyn, and half a city block. Their temperament was unpredictable and their lack of self-preservation only multiplied their danger factor. She feared the Megalopolan mob not half as much as she worried about the exploding ultra beasts. [break][break]

She was admittedly glad their route minimized contact. [break][break]

She followed in line with Nenet and the Clefable that seemed a little standoffish towards Zev if she was reading his body language correctly. A few questions sat poised on her tongue, but whatever she could glean from a conversation would change nothing about their mission, so she let it pass. Instead, she considered the Tapu. "I have yet to fight a Tapu," she said with an obvious glance at Fern. There was a concern more pressing than the deity they were going to find, and that was the one they were going to summon. [break][break]

"Has anyone traveled through a rift summoned by Necrozma before?" Would it kill them? The otherworldly being would have no attachment to her, so would it abandon her in another world? She felt no one had addressed the cufant in the room, that this was a huge amount of trust to put in one another - or, at least, for her comparatively powerless self to put in them. [break][break]

Even with that hanging over her head, she couldn't have said no. The potential knowledge on the other side of the rift outweighed any cost.

"Oh, but they're so delightful," Fern enthused, waving away the distaste that ameena abadi seemed to bear for the explosive ultra beasts. If they were to know Fern better, they would likely find it unsurprising to hear that he was drawn to the clownish creatures and their spontaneous combustion. Everything about it screamed their brand of chaotic and mischievous.[break][break]

Of course, this wasn't the time nor the place to deal with any run-ins, so they could set aside their entertainment. If only for the sake of hastening their approach to the top of the tower. Closer to those rifts and the elusive mystery they had glimpsed within the tears before Necrozma had stitched them back up again.[break][break]

They've wandered this trail before, so they followed after Zev Harcourt with relative ease. Particularly now that that knew what to expect when Necrozma revealed itself to them again.[break][break]

"It could be," they replied as they mulled over Neffatari Nzingha's question. "They are all guardians, after all. Defending the space they inhabit is baked into them to some degree, I think." They pointed upward toward Tapu Koko. "Though, admittedly, that one wasn't terribly aggressive when we met. More curious than anything else." Its temper was still no joke, however. Mercurial and combative, hand in hand.[break][break]

"I do think it will depend on what we know of Tapu Lele, in general." Something told them that it might not be so serene, but firm as the Tapu Fini they had encountered, courtesy of Elisabeth Fiorelli. They chattered on, pleasantness continuing to cover up their anticipation. They shook their head as they glanced toward ameena abadi."Not counting the ones directly accessible to Hoenn, this will be my first." Their gaze flit ahead to the front of the group, assuming that Zev, of all people would be the most experienced.

Though Zev had battled the shiny Tapu Bulu at the Ultra Crater before, he could not deny that Fern had more overall experience with the Tapus. As such, Zev allowed them to answer Nenet's question. He listened in silence, adding the knowledge to his own arsenal in preparation for the encounter to come. [break][break]

Ameena's question prompted Zev to glance in her direction. "I have." [break][break]

He recalled the night of his Avatarship, when Necrozma snatched him from this very plane into another universe. The wondrous sight of Ultra Space paled in comparison to the union of man and monster, and the ensuing revelations. [break][break]

"There shouldn't be any risk of injury or death, if that's your worry," Zev said, though his detached tone did not exactly convey reassurance. [break][break]

The elevator pinged softly as it reached the roof. Its doors slid open with a soft sigh, revealing the flat edge of the tower's summit. Beyond, the Lesser Megalopolis spread out like a blanket of rubble and ruin, separated from where they stood by a breathtaking, dizzying drop. [break][break]

Above, the farthest reaches of space hung like an oppressive dome draped with the cold and distant stars. [break][break]

Wind whipped at Zev's hair and clothing as he stepped out toward the blackness. Craning his head, he pierced the inky veil with his consciousness and called to his patron. [break][break]

From the darkest depths, Necrozma emerged.

NECROZMA EMERGES TO JOIN THE FOUR in the bouldery expanse of this world. The sky is a deep polluted purple, dense with some fog or smoke or dusty curtain of low hanging clouds. Occasionally, a shaft of light filters through, rendered a sour orange against the mauve firmament.

Dirt clouds are kicked up by dry winds. They scrape against the looming stone walls and monoliths. As the party beholds this direful land, Necrozma stretches its limbs and emits a tortured cry. The Prismatic Beast fires a laser toward the sky: a beacon for the roaming Tapu here...

But it does not come. As suspected, this task will not be easy.

Ahead, they see shifting figures in the dirt storms, limping. Crawling. Groveling.

"We can hope curiosity staves any immediate attacks then," Nenet muses to Fern. Her gaze cuts to Ameena, who Zev's words surely do little to comfort.

They arrive at the top of a tower and before them spans a ruined city, and though it holds its own discoveries the sky above reveals the true wonder. From a speck grows an even darker darkness, and from that the alien and terrifying form of Necrozma. The land around them shifts, and instead of concrete Nenet's shoes stand on dirt and pebble and a noxious sky spreads above them.

Necrozma fires a beam of light.

There isn't enough time to examine their surroundings fully, instead the sound of scraping, crawling, just far enough away to be unclear raises the hair on the back of Nenet's neck. She takes a step back, her hand moving to touch Clefable before she looks to Zev for answers as to whatever those sounds might be.

Not waiting, she plunges her hand into her back and pulls out a second pokeball to release Celesteela, directing it with, "Wide Guard." The Ultra Beast's arms spread outwards, forming a shield with enough of an illusion of protection that Nenet speaks again.

"What are those," she whispers softly. Around them the sky whips dirt through the air, further obscuring their unknown guests. "Clefable can teleport us if we all stay close enough to him." What she doesn't admit is there's very little visible places for them to go.

Necrozma continues to hover nearby.

She's not so comforted by Zev's experience. By every relevant criterion, he is not like the rest of them. Still, she isn't going to be the sole naysayer, so she marches forth. Necrozma's presence is the opposite of a comfort, and his beacon only reminds her that they cannot go backwards. They have committed. [break][break]

Nenet pulls out Celesteela and Ameena follows with her Xurkitree. "If the Tapu are protective, then a drastic change to the environment they oversee might pull it out." She looks at Xurkitree meaningfully, and the ultra beast summons an electric terrain to surround the area. Ameena stays close to Nenet and her Clefable, though Gardevoir is equally capable of teleporting at the first sign of the trouble. Gardevoir's behavior has been increasingly fight-eager, and she's not so confident the psychic will choose to flee when a fight is possible. [break][break]

In all, she's really putting more trust forth than is wise. "I cannot remove the dust clouds effectively," she admits, "but that might be the next best step."

They nod in response to Nenet's postulation. "Yes, we can certainly hope. Though I'm unsure if this Tapu Lele's nature will align more with its kin, or to the Lele of Hoenn." Chaotic in a manner that different from their own patron.[break][break]

As expected, Necrozma appears in response to Zev's bid for the creature. Unlike their last visit, it pulls them into the world they had only been given a glimpse of before. The howl of the wind whips around them and showers them with gritty dust. The muddled shades of the world clash with each other, and they squint through the rolling clouds of dirt and fog for any sign of what might be ahead to little avail.[break][break]

Then necrozma's shrill call hums through them. Tapu Koko seems to resonate with the cry, and it flits through the air with burgeoning agitation, or perhaps it is anticipation at the prospect of finally encountering its kin. The consequential ray of light that seems to summon anything but Lele to their location. The shuffling figures shamble and crawl. Dragging through the obscuring winds. "Unwanted company, looks like," they chime as their patron kicks off pulses of electricity.[break][break]

It's warning goes unheeded.[break][break]

Their eyes drift toward Ameena, and Fern nods their agreement. "Giving it something to question is smart, though hopefully it won't come out immediately aggressive." The pulse of electricity that fans from her xurkitree is welcome to The Charlatan. The energy produced crawls along the ground and they soak it up just as much as any electric-type might.[break][break]

"I might be able to work on that." They release their kingdra, the aquatic dragon drifting alongside Fern before it loops and weaves in an ornate RAIN DANCE to summon down the spatter of rainfall from the murky skies. Unaffected as they are, they do not stop to consider the combination of the two elements.[break][break]

But the aim is to determine what it is crawling along the ground. Perhaps it will serve to slow whatever force is coming their way. "Best we keep close, and avoid getting separated if this isn't enough to distill all these clouds."

Electrified rain from ameena abadi's and fern delaney's combined efforts battered against Clefable's WIDE GUARD. The dusty wind died down, dampened, yet the strange shuffling figures were still too far away to discern their details. Zev squinted through the torrential weather but shook his head. [break][break]

"It's hard to tell from this distance. We need to move closer." [break][break]

Staying close together as Fern suggested, the group crossed the wet ground. Zev summoned his armor, drawing the black shards across his body in preemptive self-defense. As they drew near to the limping and crawling creatures, he whistled for his Chandelure. [break][break]

"Give us some light so we can see what those are," he ordered. The sky was too dark with dense, low-hanging clouds; no sun shone through them. [break][break]

The Luring Pokémon trilled, casting a SPOTLIGHT down upon the central area ahead of them, capturing as many of the foreign figures within the ring of light as he could.
